Freight density & class — quick guide

This calculator estimates LTL freight class from density using standard NMFC density guidelines. Enter your item dimensions and weight (or multiple rows/loads) to compute cubic feet, density (lb/ft³), and an estimated class. Results help you quote, compare carriers, and reduce reclass risk.

Formula
ft³ = (L×W×H) / 1728
density = weight / ft³
Use inches & pounds, or switch units in the toolbar.
Example
48×40×50 in at 500 lb
Cube ≈ 55.6 ft³ → Density ≈ 9.0 lb/ft³
Class may vary by commodity, packaging, and liability.
FAQ

Is this the final freight class? No. Density is a strong indicator, but the final class may be affected by commodity, stowability, handling, liability, and packaging. Always confirm with your carrier or NMFC item.

How do multiple rows work? Each row represents a handling unit (pallet/carton/crate). Totals and “All Loads” combine the rows to show overall cube, weight, and blended density.

How can I reduce reclass risk? Measure dimensions accurately, include pallet height, avoid rounded “nice” numbers, and choose packaging that protects freight without adding unnecessary cube.

What data is stored? This tool can run offline as a PWA. Any saved data stays on your device unless you export it.

Note: This site provides estimates for educational and quoting support. It does not provide carrier-certified classifications.
Tip: Paste multiple lines with qty,length,width,height,weight (and optional package). Example: 1,48,40,50,500,pallet

Note: Density class is a guideline. Commodity, packaging, stowability, liability, and handling can override class.
